Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri sensationally came from two sets down to defeat arch rival Omar Assar of Egypt 4-3 to win the 2022 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) African Championship Men Singles title.
The last time Quadri won the African title was in 2018 in Mauritius, he lost the crown to Assar in Cameroon last year and was also on the verge of losing again.
After losing the first two sets 8-11, 9-11, Quadri showed grit and class to win the third set 11-8, it became even more difficult when Assar took the fourth set 11-6.
Quadri however showed why he’s the top rated African ping pong player by winning the last three sets 11-7, 13-11, 14-12.
He had defeated compatriot Taiwo Mati in the semi final, Mati the Africa Under 19 Champion, surprisingly handed a shock to Egyptian veteran Ahmed Saleh in the quarter final .
In the Women Singles, Dina Meshref defeated Yousra Helmy to claim her third continental crown
