Abiodun Warns Transporters Against Flammable Cargo, Mourns Victims of Abeokuta-Sagamu Tragedy

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has issued a firm directive to commercial vehicle operators, warning them against transporting flammable substance to safeguard passengers’ lives and prevent avoidable disasters.

This follows a devastating accident on the Abeokuta-Sagamu Interchange Expressway near the Muhammadu Buhari Estate, where a commercial vehicle carrying a gas cylinder exploded, claiming 16 lives.

The ill-fated white Mazda bus (registration number KJA949YJ) was reportedly transporting a filled gas cylinder when it ignited, leading to a catastrophic fire.

In a statement issued on Tuesday evening by his Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, Governor Abiodun described the incident as preventable, emphasizing the urgent need for stricter safety measures in handling and transporting flammable substances such as gas and petroleum products.

He charged the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) with the responsibility of sensitizing their members on the grave risks associated with transporting hazardous materials, while further  stressing that fostering a culture of safety and responsibility among drivers is crucial to preventing future tragedies.

Expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives, Governor Abiodun extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families while praying for divine strength to help them endure their profound loss.

“This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by transporting flammable materials. As we mourn, we must also act. Drivers, unions, and regulatory agencies must collaborate to enforce strict safety protocols to prevent a recurrence,” the governor stated.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to road safety, calling for heightened vigilance and adherence to regulations to protect lives. “Passenger safety must remain paramount. Through collective efforts and a commitment to best practices, we can significantly reduce the risks associated with transporting dangerous goods,” he added.
