INFORMATION MINISTER HARPS ON THE GAINS OF LIBERALISED MEDIA SPACE

Broadcasting in Nigeria has a rich history that dates back to the Colonial era which over the years has evolved from a government owned radio and television stations to a more liberalized media space.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris Malagi stated this at the opening of the first National Conference of the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters(SNB) held in Abuja.

The Minister represented by the Executive Secretary of Nigeria Press Council, Dr. David Ezuga, noted that the liberalized media space, with hundreds of private and public broadcasters has reflected the dynamism and vibrancy of the nation’s burgeoning population.

According to him, members of the SNB as a primary custodian of information and dissemination has helped in shaping the narrative that guide public perception.

In a keynote address, the Chairman and CEO of the Channels Media Group, Dr. John Momoh urged members of the society to commit to working together to harness the potential benefits in the digital age to ensure Nigeria thrive in the new era.

In a welcome address, the Executive Secretary of BON and National Coordinator of the Society, Dr Yemisi Gbangbose said the take off of a highly sophisticated Audience Measurement System initiated by the Minister of Information will be highly beneficial to the broadcast sector and the media in general.

The first National Conference of the Society is being attended by top media personalities amongst whom is the general manager of OGBC, Mrs. Toyin Sogbesan.
