The Ogun State Government has responded to allegations by the Ogun State chapter of the Coalition for United Political Parties (CUPP), which claimed that 68.1% of Ogun residents have been plunged into poverty under the current administration.
The government described the allegations as unfounded and politically motivated.
In a statement by Hon. Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Media and Strategy to the Governor, the government challenged the coalition to provide verifiable data to support its claims.
The statement noted that while the government typically avoids responding to such accusations, it felt compelled to clarify matters to prevent misinformation.
The government highlighted several achievements under Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration, including significant investments such as the $400 million agreement with Arise Integrated Industrial Platform to develop the Olokola Free Trade Zone, a $500 million investment in the state’s power infrastructure by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and other initiatives aimed at boosting agriculture, technology, and industrialization in Ogun State.
It also emphasized infrastructure improvements, including over 600 kilometers of new roads and policies aimed at enhancing the Ease of Doing Business in the state.
These developments, the government argued, have positioned Ogun State as a leading investment destination in Nigeria.
Addressing CUPP’s criticisms, the statement urged the coalition to engage with facts rather than resorting to baseless accusations adding that the administration remains focused on creating a safe and prosperous environment for all residents.
The government cited its efforts to modernize power infrastructure through the newly established Ogun Electricity Market (OGEM), designed to deregulate electricity supply and enhance services to residents, this, it stated, reflects its commitment to fostering industrial growth and improving living standards in the state.
The State government therefore called on CUPP to contribute constructively to the state’s development rather than engaging in what it described as unproductive politicking.
