The President Bola Tinubu-led administration is not unaware of the importance of free Press in promoting democracy.

It will therefore continue to uphold the freedom of the Press with a view to promoting good governance in the country.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohamed Idris gave the assurance on Wednesday at the opening of the 8th Triennial National Delegates’ Conference of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, in Owerri, the Imo state capital.

Represented by Dr Suleiman Haruna, Alhaji Idris acknowledged the efforts of the media in championing democracy and national development, saw the need for the government, the Media and the people to see themselves as partners and work together to enhance the nation’s democracy.

Earlier in a welcome address, the outgoing/outgone President of the NUJ, Comrade Chris Isiguzo, emphasized that democracy cannot thrive in Nigeria without a free, fair and functional media, urging Journalists to unite towards building a strong and innovative Union that will continue to protect journalists as they carry out their duties.

He noted that the Journalism Enhancement Bill, championed by the Union and currently before the National Assembly, will enhance the well-being of Journalists in the country when passed into law.
