A renewed call has been made for the restructuring of the Nigerian nation for the country to experience sustainable development.
The Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka made the callĀ on Thursday while delivering the 50th anniversary lecture of The Punch Newspaper entitled,’ recovering the narrative’ held at the Civic Centre,Victoria Island, Lagos.
Professor Soyinka who noted that it is high time the Nigerian and African leaders at large stopped paying lip service to good governance, said it is important for leaders to determine the will of the people on a regular basis.
According to the Nobel laureate, though the military rule is not a suitable option as it doesn’t ,the citizens should not be taken for a ride by the democratically elected leaders over issues that affect their well-being.
Stressing the importance of effective nation building to the progress of the African continent, Professor Soyinka was of the opinion that no section of the society must be marginalised to prevent social unrest.
He charged the Punch Newspaper to continue to contribute to the transformation of humanity with proper language use in its reportage for a better society.
In a goodwill message, the Ogun State governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, represented by his deputy, Engineer Noimot Salako-Oyedele described the Punch Newspaper as a voice of the voiceless and an media outfit championing the values that define the essence of journalism.
Governor Abiodun commended the management and staff the Punch for changing the narrative of Nigeria through reliable and objective journalistic work.
