The need for political office holders to spread the dividends of democracy to the grassroots and make the people there to have a sense of belonging in governance has returned to the centre stage.
The commissioner for local Government and Chieftaincy, Honourable Afolabi Afuwape statedĀ this thisĀ Tuesday at an empowerment programme put together by the Abeokuta South Local government Chapter of the All Progressives Congress said that people at the grassroots are constantly mobilized to cast their votes during elections and are known to always be loyal to their political leaders.
Speaking in like manner, a former speaker of the House of Assembly, the Right Honourable Titi Oseni-Gomez and a former sports commissioner, Honourable Bukola Olopade informed that the programme was to show appreciation to party supporters especially petty traders in the local government.
On his part, a Chieftain of APC,Chief Adeniyi Edun said the empowerment became necessary because all party members can not get political appointments.
Informing that 75 party members selected from all the wards benefitted from the empowerment programme, the Abeokuta South APC Chairman ,Chief Henry Fagbenro assured that the programme will be sustained.
Describing it as first of its kind,a beneficiary, Mrs Maria Lipede lauded the leadership of the party for the gesture just as she urged them not to relent in ensuring that the dividends of democracy gets to everyone.
