Post harvest losses is a major challenge facing the Nigerian agriculture sector. This is one area that stakeholders have been agitating for an affirmative action to save the food value chain in Nigeria. There is no doubt that the Corona virus has shown the developing nations of the world that self reliance is possible if they can harness their resources, value what they have and formulate policies that will enhance growth and development in the various sectors of their economies. One important thing that each country of the world should strive to achieve is the availability of safe food for its population and for this to happen, everything that can cause waste and food losses after harvest must be done away with in the process of food production.
The questions are; how can we solve this problem in Nigeria? What are those things we need to put in place to mitigate post harvest losses? Some people say we need effective and efficient storage facility and good roads to enhance transportation of produce from farm to markets. How effective and efficient is our storage facility in Nigeria? Post covid 19 requires that we do things differently and creatively in the agriculture sector and one of the things we need to do is curb post harvest losses in Nigeria. Let’s talk about it as we are look at Post Harvest Losses in Nigeria and what we can do to mitigate it.
