AFCON 2023: Troost Ekong’s Penalty Lift Eagles Above Elephants

The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Thursday defeated hosts Cote D’Ivoire 1-0 to stay on course for qualification to the knockout stages of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Stand in captain William Troost Ekong converted a penalty won by Victor Osimhen early in the second half to take the three time African Champions to four points in group A and brighten their chances to even finish as group winners.

The Ivorians searched for an equalizer all through, but the introduction of 2013 AFCON winner Kenneth Omeruo and Bright Osayi-Samuel solidified the defense and the tactical play of Jose Peseiro was enough to seal victory.

Attention now shifts to the last group game against Guinea Bissau’s Wild Dogs on Monday.

In the group’s other game, Equatorial Guinea defeated Guinea Bissau 4-2 and could pick up one of the group’s qualification ticket if they get a result against the Ivorians in their last group game
