Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has called on the newly deplored Commissioner of Police to the State to come up with new strategies in tackling cultism and kidnapping and other security challenges in the State.
The governor made the call when he received the new Police Commissioner, Mr. Abiodun Alamutu, who paid him a courtesy call in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
He said the State though peaceful, still has cultism and kidnapping to grapple with hence the need for the Police boss to device new methods to overcome the challenges.
According to the governor, “as peaceful as we have been, we still have our peculiarity. The issue of cultism are what we continue to grapple with. Incident of kidnapping here and there, we also have the issue of farmer/herders clashes although this has been tackled and it has subsided.
“As the Commissioner of Police, we are confident that you will sustain the trajectory of law enforcement with success that your predecessors had started. That expectation is underscored by your very rich background and training.
“The different courses you took in the Nigerian Police, your are a graduate of the Lagos State University, you have been through different rigorous training in the Police Colleges. You were a Mobil Police Squadron Leader, Commander at different units of the Police at different point in time. You led different international assignments and engagements so you are adequately prepared for this job”, the governor noted.
He said as a man who has served in different capacities and familiar with the State’s terrain, the new Police boss is expected to put his wealth of experience into play by working closely with other security agencies for a more secured State.
“You have been here without any interregnum and you have served as deputy Commissioner of Police. I know you are going to hit the ground. You know the State like the back of your hands and you know the challenges that will confront you.
“I don’t have a doubt that you will sustain the inter-agency cooperation and collaboration that has existed and continue to exist between the Police and all the members of our security architecture”, the governor advised.
Governor Abiodun disclosed that training would be given to Police men and other security personnel on how to fly drones, assuring that his administration would support security agencies so that the people and investors could go about their legitimate businesses without any hindrance.
Speaking earlier, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abiodun Alamutu, said he came to intimate the governor of his mission as given by the Acting Inspector General of Police, which is to rid the State of crimes.
He noted the peaceful atmosphere in the State, but added that ritual killings, cultism and kidnapping are still security challenges that most be tackled, assuring that he would device new ways, including moral persuasion and sensitisation to address the issues.
The new police boss acknowledged the bad eggs in the police system, but assured that he would reoriented his men to be civil with the people to have their confidence, cautioning however, that he would not tolerate members of the public harassing his officers and men, as there would be a dedicated telephone lines for people to lodge complaints against police infractions.
