Speaker of the House of Representatives Rep Femi Gbajabiamila has confirmed a horrible incident involving the killing of a newspaper vendor Ifeanyichokwu Okereke from stray bullet released by a security detail attached to his convoy yesterday (Thursday) in Abuja.
A release personally signed by the Speaker has it that the unfortunate incident occurred after a brief stop to exchange pleasantries with a group of newspaper vendors at the federal secretariat Abuja.
According to the Speaker, unfortunately after the convoy set out again in c
continuation of its movement after the friendly exchange, unidentified men obstructed the convoy which caught the attention of security men in the convoy who shot in the air to disperse them.
The Speaker said his detour to exchange pleasantries with the vendors, many of whom have known him since he moved to Abuja was a usual practice, born out of his respect for all people irrespective of their social standing.
The Speaker has it that the incident was brought to his attention hours after reaching his destination that someone was hit by a stray bullet, contrary to an earlier report by men in the convoy that they applied their security discretion to shoot in the air.
The Speaker had caused a report to be made to the local police station and an investigation has commenced.
In the meantime; the officer who fired the fatal shot has been suspended from the convoy pending the conclusion of the investigation.
He reiterated value for human life and his respect for all people irrespective of social economic status as what endeared me to the vendors and the reasons why he stopped his convoy quite often to connect with them.
The Speaker noted that for one of them to have been shot by his security detail is horrific and he cannot begin to imagine the grief and loss Ifeanyi’s family must be feeling, adding that no family should have to go through such an experience.
The Speaker expressed personally distraught about this incident, and extended his deepest sympathies to the victim, his family and Abuja vendors.
